Simply Red

On Saturday December 19, 2015, I saw the band Simply Red at the O2 arena in London, England. It was one of the best live shows I have ever been to in my life. Lead singer, Mick Hucknall, unquestionably has one of the finest voices in the world. His sound, like others in his genre, is dubbed “blue eyed soul” referring to white artists who do black music very well.

Hucknall, in all his ginger glory, appeared on stage with his trademark fabulous, flaming red hair and exquisite voice. He put on a fantastic show for two hours. He energetically sang and danced, thoroughly entertaining the crowd. His voice amazingly sounds better than the band’s high quality sounding albums. This is a difficult feat for any artist, especially considering the fact the voice often changes as artists get older. Hucknall was backed up by a first class six piece band.

Hucknall sang my favorite Simply Red tunes I began listening to as an 9-year-old. The appreciation for Simply Red’s musical talent has continued throughout my life. Hearing them sing live is a reminder to me of what real singers and musicians who know and properly hone their craft should sound like. There were no gimmicks. Just rich, warm, vibrant music.

Simply Red

Simply Red performed sold out shows three nights in a row at the O2, which is impressive, as they have no new hits in high rotation on the radio. The O2 is also a great venue. The choice of restaurants and smaller venues within the larger complex is aesthetically appealing with a welcoming vibe. The O2 has a very modern look with a nice atmosphere.

I have been maintaining such a hectic schedule that I have not had much free time. However, I decided to go to the concert less than 12 hours before it was scheduled to commence. When I checked a main ticketing site many people use, all the tickets were sold out. I cautiously decided to try Stub Hub, which I’d read about this year. As they issue a guaranty regarding purchases on their website, I bought one of the few remaining tickets to the show that someone was reselling. I was able to download and print the ticket to successfully gain entry into the venue to watch the show.

I had a marvelous time listening to and singing along with the music that has been apart of my life since childhood. A nice man with a northern (England) accent who sat next to me also made me smile with polite conversation. I had a fabulous time. Glad I went to the show. What a great night.
